Fast, easy access to our online databases in the library and in Rooms 305 and 404 is through icons right on the computer’s desktop. These databases can, of course, always be accessed from the school web page. All of them can also be accessed from home with a password. These passwords are posted in the library and in the computer labs.

The SIRS Knowledge Source

This database is best for the LATEST information. It is actually three databases in one. SIRS Researcher consists mostly of newspaper and magazine articles. SIRS Government Reporter includes a tremendous amount of information from the US government. SIRS Renaissance contains reference book articles on the arts.

This database is great for current events projects, American history classes, and religion and Civil Liberties classes working on contemporary issues.


SIRS Decades: 20th Century American Sources

SIRS Decades: 20th Century American Sources, is an electronic subscription resource containing Primary Source and reference content from the 20th century.  Content is organized into curricular topics pertaining to American History, culture, and daily life of the time.  Primary source types include: Advertisements, Editorial Cartoons, Letters, Memos, Messages, Maps and Charts, Original Documents, Original Works of Art, Photographs, Poems and Literary Works, Posters, Published Articles, Speeches and Addresses.

This database is great for American history classes, and religion and Civil Liberties classes working on contemporary issues.

The Student Resource Center

Our school's most important online database, The Student Resource Center is a giant compendium of information about virtually all school topics. Its information consists of reference book articles, newspaper, magazine, and  journal articles, primary documents, images, videos, and music. The database contains specialized Topic Tree searches in Cultures, Geography, Literature, Science, U.S. History and World History.  The Toolbox includes valuable help and advice for writing research papers.


The US History Resource Center

The US History Resource Center is similar to the Student Resource Center. Both are products of Thomson Gale and have the same interface and specialized searches. This database, however, consists on information about American history only.

The Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center

The Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is also a Thomson Gale product. This database consists on the entire Greenhaven Press “Opposing Viewpoints” series of books. The database consists of viewpoint essays, reference material, newspaper and magazine articles, images, primary documents, and links to web sites. It will also search the materials in The Student Resource Center at the same time.

This database is great for research on all current issues. It would be perfect for religion classes and for projects dealing with moral or ethical issues.

    NOVEL (or New York Online Virtual Electronic Library) Databases
    from Thomson Gale

    New York State has provided to schools and libraries a collection of Thomson Gale databases through the NOVEL program.  Included are the following databases: Health Reference Center Academic and Health and Wellness Resource Center – perfect for Health or science classes; Business & Company Resource Center – excellent for Economics class; The Twayne Authors Series – an excellent collection of literary criticism; Informe – a collection of Spanish full text newspaper articles; New York State Newspapers – includes full text of ten state newspapers including the NY Times and NY Post, and the Gale Virtual Reference Library – search through a growing collection of e-books.


    EBSCO Host Research Databases

    EBSCO Host includes full text multidisciplinary general reference publications, and periodicals. It also includes a database on topics relating to animals, Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia, and a database of poplar science publications. It includes a Spanish interface as well…EBSCOhost Espanol.

    This database would be excellent for science research and health classes. The Spanish interface would make interesting projects for Spanish class.



    World and I School Online

    "World and I" has been an important magazine for high school students for many years.  All of their articles are now online and searchable for research.  New articles (with many illustrations) are added to the database each month.

    There are also individual sections on Social Studies (including a giant section on the Civil War), Language Arts, Science, the Arts, and Spanish, as well as a section for teachers called Teacher's Corner.

    Issues and Controversies in American History

    World and I is a clear, concise, and balanced explanations of the most contentious issues in American history, placing students in the middle of the great historical debates, and allowing them to view these issues as they were being argued.  Biographies, timelines, background articles, photographs, and maps augment the curriculum-based coverage of historical events.  Carefully selected primary documents, linking directly to the factual coverage, give the points of view on all sides of the debates as they were promulgated at the time.
