Salesian's sports traditions remain strong

A home, a school, a parish, and a family.

At a time when there were 90 elements to the Periodic Table, a gallon of gasoline cost 26 cents and the first modern art museum opened in Washington, DC, a group of priests and brothers laid the cornerstone to a dream on 17 acres overlooking Long Island Sound in New Rochelle. The year was 1920, the men were Salesians of St. John Bosco, and the dream is Salesian High School.

Salesian is an academic high school for boys. It embodies the rich educational tradition of St. John Bosco -- a tradition based on Reason, Religion, Kindness, and the presence of educators among the students. Since the average class size is 24, our students enjoy the benefits of a quality academic program in a structured and supportive setting that prizes personalized attention.

Salesian is a home that welcomes; a school that prepares for life; a parish where Christian values shape character; and a family where lasting friendships are formed.

Whether in the classroom, in the gym, or at various extracurricular activities and events, Salesian's dedicated faculty helps students develop their potential. Through personal and career counseling and quality academic instruction, our students are encouraged to strive toward academic excellence and to mature as productive and responsible Christian gentlemen.

Under the direction of the Paul Effman Organization, music is in full swing at Salesian High School.  In addition to weekly small group lessons, the full band meets twice a week to rehearse for various school functions. Students can choose from a wide-range of instruments and may participate in the program regardless of their level of experience.

AUTOMATED LIBRARY

Salesian students enjoy the benefits of technology in their school library/media center.  They can search for books using the automated card catalog on computers.  Their library also extends onto their school web page.  They can use links to helpful web sites collected by the librarian and their teachers.  They can use online databases and e-Books for research both at school and from their home computers.  Databases for their use include the SIRS Knowledge Source and SIRS Decades, Cengage Gale's Student Resource Center, U.S. History Resource Center, Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center, and Science Resource Center, as well as the NOVEL (New York Online Virtual Electronic Library) databases provided by NY State.

AMERICAN HISTORY ACADEMY PROGRAM

Salesian High School is the fourth school in the country and the first outside of New York City selected by the Gilder/Lehrman Foundation.  The Foundation will help the school integrate American studies into the school curriculum.  Through this grant, Salesian High School has created a small academically rigorous learning environment that offers courses in American history throughout the four-year high school curriculum.  The Foundation will oversee Salesian’s American Studies Academy and supply support, equipment, hardware and software. Teachers are invited to participate in seminars and enrichment programs and fellowships taught by renowned historians at ivy league schools.

SATURDAY HISTORY PROGRAM

An extension of the Salesian High School American History Program, the Saturday Academy, held at Salesian High School on six Saturday mornings, is a coed, tuition free enrichment program offered to all Catholic, Private, and Public school students in grades 7 through 10.  Students that participate in this program funded by The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History have the opportunity to examine selected topics in American History Studies based on materials supplied by the teachers.  In addition to analyzing primary sources, videos, slides and music, students participate in group discussions, us the school's computers, and go on field trips.  Best of all -- no homework and no tests!  Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the Academy will send a Certificate of Achievement to the student's school.
