American Art and Architecture Projects
Sophomore Art Classes
Ms. Sheila Hanley
Spring 2006

As part of their study of 19th Century America, sophomores in the Studio Art class examined the work of the Hudson River painters.  They learn about their interest in landscape, in the effects of light, in the untamed wilderness, and in exotic, far-away places.  They began their study by creating a pastel drawing based closely on the work of a Hudson River painter like Thomas Cole.  They followed this project with an original drawing or painting based on a scene of their own choosing.  They tried to recreate the sense of almost divine light and the majesty of nature, which dwarfs mankind.  Shown below are preliminary sketches and original art from the class of 2008.
